Chesta Teachers’ Training College (TTC): Courses, Location, Fees, Contacts

CHESTA TTC LOCATION

Chesta Teacher Training College (TTC) is located in Wei Wei, West Pokot County of the Rift Valley Region in Kenya.

CHESTA TTC HISTORY

The term ‘Chesta’ means ‘star’ in Pokot language which is the language of the college catchment area. ELCK missionaries established the college in 2010. Unfortunately, the Chesta Private College was not sustainable from 2013. Having experienced the impact of an educational institution on the verge of collapse, the community highly treasured the justification and demand of establishing a government managed teacher training college.

Chesta TTC was then re-established and registered on 4th April 2014. Being the only public Teacher Training College in West Pokot County, the primary objective of re-establishment was to meet the high and unmatched demands for education because of increased youth and secondary school graduate population’s desire for training opportunities.

The college opened its doors to the first batch of 193 students in October 2014. This first cohort of students was selected during the national selection exercise.

The college re-located from the old ELCK college compound to its current location in October 2015. Today, it is the place where knowledge is brewed to thousands of Kenyans as a National Teachers Training College. Kenyans of all walks of life have had an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills attitudes, values and wholesome training as teachers with basic life skills required for nation building.

It occupies an area of 56 acres, which provides enough space for infrastructural development and play grounds. From its humble beginning, the college has trained ECD, P1, DECTE and DPTE upgrade and DPTE regular students.

St. Joseph’s Chepterit Girls || SCHOOL’S HISTORY

St. Joseph’s Girls High School, Chepterit, is a national girls’ secondary school located in Nandi County. The school was named after St. Joseph, in honour of the first pioneer missionary, Fr. Joseph Khun, a Mill Hill Priest and the founder of Chepterit Catholic Parish.

The academic giant was established in 1951 as a mixed primary school, with Sr. Saint Albert Langton serving as the headmistress. She left six years later, in 1957.

Boys who completed standard five and qualified continued their education at Kapsabet African Government School (now Kapsabet High School) for standard six. Girls who qualified, along with students from other schools, joined Chepterit Girls, which was then an intermediate school.

At one point, the school became a teacher training college for primary teachers, a program that continued until 1958 when it was transferred to St. Joseph’s in Kitale.

Chepterit Girls’ Full History

The student population had grown to 150 by 1957, of which 100 were boarders. At this time, the school’s name was changed from Chepterit Girls to St. Joseph’s High School, Chepterit.

In 1961, as more girls qualified for secondary education, they no longer needed to attend Loreto Limuru. St. Joseph’s High School, Chepterit, officially began offering secondary education from Form 1

The intermediate section was gradually phased out, and by 1966, the school comprised only Forms 1–4. Sr. Felician Sheeran was appointed principal after the primary section was relocated nearby.

In 1974, the school expanded to admit two streams, and in 2002, it moved to three streams. By 2024, the school had grown to 11 streams in Form 1, with Form 2 having the fewest at seven.

St. Joseph’s Girls High School, Chepterit, has evolved over the years into a national school with a student population exceeding 2,000.

Upper Hill High School || SCHOOL’S HISTORY

The history of the learning institution is closely tied to that of State House Girls’ High School (SGHS) and the colonial reorganization of educational institutions in Kenya.

The land on which SGHS now sits once hosted a European hospital, with the current administration block serving as the original hospital building. In January 1954, the hospital was relocated to establish what is now Nairobi Hospital, creating space for a new school initially named the New Girls’ Secondary School. For a time, the school and a remaining European dispensary operated side by side.

In 1955, the school was split. A portion of the student body, along with the headmistress and some resources, moved to Eldoret to establish Highland School, now known as Moi Girls’ School, Eldoret. Meanwhile, a new mixed-gender student population was formed at the Nairobi site. In 1956, the school was renamed Delamere High School in honour of Lord Delamere, one of the most prominent British settlers in colonial Kenya.

Initially, Delamere High School served both European boys and girls who were not admitted to elite colonial institutions, such as the Duke of York School (now Lenana School) and the Prince of Wales School (now Nairobi School). However, this co-educational arrangement lasted only a few years.

Upper Hill School’s full history

Upper Hill Boys High School: The boys were relocated to a separate institution in 1958, named Delamere Boys’ School, marking the beginning of what would eventually become Upper Hill School. The girls remained at the former location, which evolved into Lady Delamere Girls’ School, now known as State House Girls’ High School.

In 1959, Delamere Boys’ School was firmly established as a boys-only school. A decade later, in 1969, the institution was renamed Simba Secondary School as part of a broader effort to Africanize school names following independence. Eventually, it was renamed once again to reflect its geographic location — Upper Hill School — named after the area and road on which it is situated.

Originally a day school, Upper Hill began transitioning into a boarding institution in 1997. The transition was completed in 2004, and it is now a fully boarding school, accommodating over 1,000 students. Delamere Hostels were used to house a small number of bright and needy students in the early years but with the school’s growth, more dormitories were built to accommodate increasing demand.

Juniour Schools’ Autonomy: TSC urged to effect administrative changes

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been urged to review the management of Junior Secondary School teachers (JSS) amid rising concerns that their placement under primary school headteachers is affecting curriculum implementation.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has written to TSC requesting an urgent meeting to address the issue.

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori warned that growing disquiet among Junior Secondary teachers over their placement under primary school headteachers is threatening the smooth rollout of the curriculum. He argued that the current arrangement, which places JS under primary school leadership, undermines the professionalism and career progression of teachers trained to handle adolescent learners.

“The ongoing demands by Junior School teachers highlight significant concerns regarding their incorporation under a leadership structure headed by primary school headteachers with qualifications not aligned to the unique demands of Junior School education,” Misori said in the letter dated October 2.

The union is pushing for the independence of the Junior Secondary wing or, alternatively, the transfer of JSS to existing secondary schools. The letter comes after a series of attempts by a section of teachers in Junior School demanding the institution’s leadership be separated from the primary schools.

“This situation has led to calls for autonomous leadership that recognises the professionalism and career development needs of Junior School teachers,” Misori added.

KUPPET has consistently maintained that Junior Secondary, which caters for learners transitioning from upper primary, is more closely aligned with secondary education in terms of pedagogy, content and learner needs.

Misori reiterated this position when Kuppet officials met President William Ruto at State House in September, where they pushed for JS to be domiciled in secondary schools to leverage existing resources, infrastructure and administrative expertise.

However, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba effectively ruled out the possibility of autonomy for over 50,000 Junior Secondary teachers, saying they will continue to work under primary school headteachers, who are also serving as principals for junior schools in an acting capacity.

Speaking before the Senate last week, Ogamba noted that junior schools are currently operating according to the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER).

“The junior schools are operating in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms,” Ogamba told Senators.

The PWPER had proposed merging junior schools with primary schools to form a single comprehensive school, headed by one principal and two deputies.

In line with this, the Teachers Service Commission directed the appointment of one junior school teacher to act as deputy principal, signalling adoption of the PWPER proposals.

TSC Addresses Promotions Controversy, Pushes for a Collaborative Resolution

TSC Addresses Promotions Controversy, Pushes for a Collaborative Resolution

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) released a statement today supporting the recent promotion of 25,000 teachers now facing heightened scrutiny and criticism from multiple stakeholders, including Parliament and teacher unions.

The Commission asserted that the process was conducted with fairness and transparency.

During her remarks at the graduation of TSC at the Kenya National Schools Principals Forum in Mombasa, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia addressed the issue for the first time, expressing hope that dialogue would resolve all concerns.

She reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to maintaining integrity and ensuring that deserving qualified teachers receive recognition.

According to Dr. Macharia, TSC has implemented various service delivery reforms aimed at enhancing its service delivery, particularly in the management of schools nationwide.

She noted that the standard promotions were part of broader efforts to acknowledge professionalism and work ethic among professionals in this field.

Nonetheless, the promotion has faced significant criticism, particularly from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). In a statement, KUPPET’s acting secretary general, Moses Nthurima, expressed concerns regarding the fairness of the distribution allocation.

He pointed out that the allocation of promotion slots across counties does not consider the teacher populations in each, as some counties will receive the same number of promotions despite large discrepancies in teacher workforce sizes.

Nthurima also alleged that some of the promoted teachers possess a significant experience deficit compared to their colleagues, raising suspicions of political interference.

He questioned the transparency of the process and condemned the Commission for failing to consult with unions prior to finalizing the promotion list.

For her part, Dr. Macharia firmly rejected claims of political influence, stating that she does not attend political functions or engage in such matters.

She emphasized that the promotions were based on merit and aligned with government policy to decentralize recruitment and establish equal opportunities across regions.

TSC urged all parties involved to participate in constructive dialogue so that the teaching sector does not lose sight of enhancing education standards.

Dr. Macharia expressed optimism that a consensus would emerge soon, permitting promoted teachers to take on their new roles without any further delays.

KUPPET ‘chases away’ two top branch officials over forgery and misconduct

KUPPET ‘chases away’ two top branch officials over forgery and misconduct

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has today expelled two of its branch bosses over disciplinary breaches involving forgery, criminal disinformation, and incitement.

In a statement In an official statement dated July 28, 2025, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo M.T. Misori confirmed the removal of Mr. William Lengoyiap as Executive Secretary for the Samburu Branch and Ms. Yvonne Musyoka as Vice Chairperson for the Machakos Branch.

“The union will not allow a few individuals to tarnish its name through unethical and illegal conduct,” said Mr. Misori. “We took the necessary steps following a thorough and fair disciplinary process.”

According to the union, Mr. Lengoyiap was found to have used a forged payslip to secure a loan from Stanbic Bank—an act deemed to have placed the union at financial risk.

Musyoka’s case reportedly involved spreading falsehoods, inciting unrest among teachers, and mobilising unsuspecting members to participate in a campaign of defamation.

“This is a betrayal of trust,” said a senior KUPPET official familiar with the investigation. “Teachers look up to their leaders for guidance and protection—not to be misled or manipulated,” the statement reads.

KUPPET pointed out that the two officials ceased to hold office as of July 17, 2025, and are now prohibited from transacting any business or speaking on behalf of KUPPET.

The public, union members, and stakeholders were also cautioned against engaging with the duo in any official capacity.

Misori assured members that service delivery in Samburu and Machakos will gp on uninterrupted.

“Our commitment is to the welfare of our members and the future of our union,” Misori concluded. “We will not be distracted by individuals who put personal interest above professional duty.”

The action is part of a broader clean-up effort by KUPPET to eliminate internal malpractice and restore confidence in its leadership, following growing concerns about forgery, misinformation, and misuse of office.

Parents request prompt capitation prior to the reopening of schools

Parents request prompt capitation prior to the reopening of schools

Parents across the nation have expressed worries about the slow release of capitation funds by the Ministry of Education, just days ahead of schools reopening for the second term.

With educational institutions about to resume, school leaders and parents are concerned that additional delays could hinder operations, impacting the quality of education.

Public schools heavily depend on government-provided funds to manage operational expenses, such as staff salaries, infrastructure upkeep, and learning materials. Nonetheless, ongoing delays in funding disbursement have left numerous institutions struggling to fulfill their financial obligations.

“We cannot efficiently run schools without prompt funding,” stated Ann Langat, a parent representative from Bomet County. “Delays compel schools to impose additional levies on parents, many of whom are already grappling with elevated living costs. ”

Education stakeholders are now urging for stricter oversight to guarantee that capitation funds are disbursed punctually. “The government must place education funding as a priority to prevent unnecessary disruptions,” remarked Grace Tanui, a teacher in Kericho. “Delays negatively impact both students and institutions. ”

As the countdown to reopening day continues, parents and school leaders remain optimistic that the ministry will act promptly to prevent another crisis.

The delayed allocation of capitation funds to public schools continues to be a recurring challenge, affecting learning and compelling institutions to operate on limited budgets. Capitation funds, allocated per student under the Free Primary and Day Secondary Education programs, are intended to cover critical school expenses, including textbooks, infrastructure, and operational costs. However, delays have become a common occurrence, leaving school administrators financially strained.

“This is not a new problem—it occurs every term,” commented Jane Muthoni, a teacher in Nakuru County. “We are compelled to borrow from suppliers or request additional contributions from parents, which undermines the principle of free education. ”

The repercussions of delayed capitation encompass accumulated debts, burdened parents, poor learning conditions, among others, and delays in repairs, among other issues. The Ministry of Education has consistently vowed to ensure timely fund disbursements, yet delays continue. In the 2023 financial year, Auditor-General reports indicated that some schools received funds months late, necessitating deficit spending.

“We are in the process of distributing the funds and anticipate their release soon,” mentioned a ministry official who requested anonymity. However, stakeholders continue to express skepticism, highlighting a lack of accountability. Education experts argue that systemic inefficiencies, bureaucratic obstacles, and inadequate budget planning contribute to the delays.

“The government needs to automate and simplify the disbursement process to align it with school terms,” asserted Dr. Moses Malawi, an educationist. “Delays threaten to undermine the very foundation of free education. ”
