Teachers medical cover AON Minet will be scrapped as the government eyes a review to give teachers a better medical cover similar to that of the civil servants.

Teachers will be moved from AON Minet cover to Social Health Authority (SHA) starting December 2025 in new TSC changes.

Teachers will be enrolled in the Public Service Medical Fund which is popular with civil servants.

This comes shortly after President William Ruto met thousands of teachers in State House where he promised to review the current teacher medical cover.

Ruto promised to review the current medical cover to ensure it is aligned with the present health needs of teachers and their families.

Teachers are paying for their medical cover through their monthly medical allowance but there have been numerous complaints from teachers over bad services.

Teachers in lower job groups, like Primary Teacher II (Grade B5), get Ksh1 million in inpatient coverage and Ksh150,000 for outpatient needs.

Meanwhile, senior educators, such as Chief Principals (Job Group D5), enjoy larger provisions, with Ksh3 million for inpatient care and Ksh450,000 for outpatient services.

Some benefits however remain consistent across the board, regardless of your job group. For instance:

• Dental Cover: Ksh45,000
• Optical Cover: Ksh60,000
• Last Expense Cover: Ksh300,000

Maternity coverage, however, is scaled with job grades, ranging from Ksh120,000 for Grade B5 to Ksh300,000 for Grade D5.

If you’re a TSC-employed teacher between 18 and 65 years old, you’re covered under this scheme.

It also extends to your loved ones—you can add one registered spouse and up to four dependent children.

These children are eligible for coverage from birth until age 18 (or up to 25 if they’re in school). And here’s a thoughtful inclusion: there’s no age limit for children with certified disabilities.

No Issues in Grade 10 Senior School Selection, Says Education Ministry

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Migos Ogamba, has assured the nation that the process of selecting senior schools for current Grade 9 students is proceeding smoothly.

Ogamba made this statement following the successful establishment of transition and placement guidelines by the Ministry in collaboration with various stakeholders.

He has instructed all junior school heads to engage their career masters to assist parents of Grade 9 learners in providing accurate information to help guide students in making informed choices.

During a graduation ceremony for 353 teachers at the Tambach TTC in Elgeyo Marakwet County, the CS expressed satisfaction with the seamless transition process for students moving from junior to senior school next year.

Highlighting that the graduates represent the first cohort trained under the Competency-Based Teacher Education (CBTE) program, Ogamba noted that their training aims to equip teachers with not only knowledge but also skills that are reflective and responsive to the evolving needs of 21st-century learners.

He mentioned that the National Education Sector Strategic Plan (NESSP) 2023-2027 emphasizes the need to retrain all teacher educators to effectively implement the CBTE curriculum.

Acknowledging the crucial role of teachers in the ongoing rollout of Competency-Based Education, the CS reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all teacher training institutions are adequately equipped to provide quality education to future educators.

Ogamba praised the college for its achievements in various co-curricular activities, which he described as vital to a well-rounded education. He emphasized that under the CBTE framework, learning extends beyond the classroom to include activities that build resilience and essential qualities in the teaching profession.

“The diverse and inclusive learning areas and co-curricular activities offered under the CBTE create opportunities for teacher trainees to identify and leverage various environments for curriculum delivery,” he stated.

While promising the Ministry’s support for the college’s infrastructure development, the CS urged the board to supplement government funding by pursuing income-generating initiatives to address key priority areas.

He encouraged the board to continue collaborating with stakeholders and partners, such as the NG-CDF, the county government, and other benefactors, to enhance infrastructural development.

Ogamba pointed out that the government has allocated a total recurrent grant of 31.4 million shillings to the college over three financial years, from 2022/2023 to 2024/2025. He stressed the board’s critical role in ensuring financial transparency, accountability, and effective management of the college’s resources.

“It is therefore crucial to maintain internal controls and timely financial reporting in accordance with the approved International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) model,” he added.

In response to calls from leaders to upgrade the college to a university, the CS stated that the Ministry is awaiting an assessment from the Commission for University Education (CUE), noting that the government aims to establish a specialized university in the region.
