Betty Kyallo explains closure of Flair with Betty due to high rent, Focuses on new ventures

Betty Kyallo says "I let it go. I am happier. I sleep better. My peace of mind is more important than a name.

Kenyan journalist and entrepreneur Betty Kyallo recently addressed the circumstances that led to her beauty shop, Flair with Betty, being put up for auction due to pending rent arrears.

In a statement on social media, Kyallo explained that the high rent made running the business unit untenable, especially given the current economic slowdown in Kenya.

“Obviously running a business in Kenya has become so difficult. Landlords don’t want to reduce rent and it becomes a huge burden on businesses that are struggling because of the economic slowdown,” Kyallo said.

She further emphasized that her peace of mind was more important than holding onto the business name, and she has since let go of the Kilimani location. “I let it go. I am happier. I sleep better. My peace of mind is more important than a name.

I’m good,” she added.

Despite the closure of Flair with Betty, Kyallo remains focused on her other business ventures. She announced the reopening of Aftershave by Flair, a men’s grooming salon, in Upperhill, La Baita, just two months after its expansion.

Keysian Auctioneers published a public notice in the dailies, stating that items from the Flair with Betty beauty parlour will be sold by public auction on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, as a result of the landlord’s case. The items up for auction include various salon equipment and furniture.

Kyallo, a serial entrepreneur, runs multiple businesses in the country. Her business acumen became evident when she partnered with Susan Kaittany to open the luxury salon brand Posh Palace in 2016. After parting ways with Kaittany in 2017, Kyallo opened her rival salon, Flair with Betty, in 2018.

Apart from the beauty industry, Kyallo has also ventured into the restaurant business with the launch of The Summer House in Karen, Nairobi, in November 2022. Despite some initial challenges with the Karen Lang’ata District Association, Kyallo remains determined to succeed in her various business endeavors.
