KNUT Demands Legal Reforms to Safeguard Teachers’ Benefits After Dismissal

KNUT Demands Legal Reforms to Safeguard Teachers’ Benefits After Dismissal

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is urging a significant policy change that would secure teachers’ benefits even in cases of dismissal related to disciplinary matters.

Speaking at a teachers’ engagement forum in Kilifi County, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu characterized the existing system as unfair and discriminatory, contending that a teacher’s right to benefits ought not to be tied to their conduct.

The union’s recommendation aims to revise the law to require the government and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to fulfill all accumulated benefits, regardless of the reasons for an educator’s departure from the profession.

“Our proposal as a union is that if you are terminated for any reason, your conduct should not influence your benefits. You should receive payment for the time you served,” Oyuu remarked.

According to KNUT, the present policy unfairly penalizes teachers who might have dedicated many years to service but forfeit all their retirement benefits due to disciplinary violations, some of which the union contends could be minor or subjective in nature.

Oyuu further stressed that while accountability is vital, financial rights should be determined by service provided, not by individual behavior.

The union’s initiative comes as part of a larger campaign to reform the treatment of teachers by the TSC, with KNUT also recently condemning recruitment procedures and disciplinary processes, which they assert are lacking in transparency and fairness.

Teachers at the Kilifi forum shared these views, recounting personal experiences of colleagues who lost their jobs and savings over what they perceived as unjust dismissals.

The proposal is anticipated to ignite discussion within the education sector and government, particularly concerning the necessity to balance employee rights with professional standards and ethical obligations.

Nevertheless, KNUT asserts that the financial stability of teachers must not be jeopardized, especially in a field that already grapples with morale issues due to demanding workloads and restricted career development.

The TSC has not yet provided an official statement, but sources indicate that the commission may resist such an overarching policy alteration, claiming that disciplinary measures must have significance to preserve professional integrity within the teaching profession.

As KNUT gets ready to formally present its proposal, it remains to be seen how Parliament and the Ministry of Education will react to what could become a crucial labor rights concern in Kenya’s educational landscape.

Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.

    • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
    • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
    • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.
  2. 2. Select Subject Combinations:

    • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
    • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.
  3. 3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

    • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
    • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
    • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

National Polytechnics, TVETs record increased students’ enrollments

Members of the National Assembly Committee on Education have lauded the growing enrollment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, calling for a concerted push to meet the government’s directive of enrolling at least 20,000 trainees in each national polytechnic.

During an inspection visit to Mawego National Polytechnic in Homabay County, the Committee acknowledged the institution’s rapid growth in the student population—from 3,000 to over 8,000 learners.

The Committee Chairperson, Hon. Julius Melly, praised the progress, saying, “This growth shows the confidence the community has in this institution. We must continue to support this momentum.”

At Kisii National Polytechnic, Chief Principal Mr. John Akola reported an enrollment of 12,768 and efforts underway to reach the 20,000 mark. “We are putting up measures to increase enrollment in line with the Ministry’s directive,” he said.

Other institutions also recorded rising numbers include Sigalagala National Polytechnic with 15,851 trainees, followed by Kitale National Polytechnic (12,248), Ollessos National Polytechnic (11,269), and Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic (6,257).

Lawmakers also lauded the increasing enrollment of female students in TVETs, noting that the gender gap is narrowing rapidly. “It is encouraging to see more young women embracing technical education,” said Hon. Melly.

According to the Ministry of Education, the 20,000-enrollment target for each national polytechnic is part of a broader government plan to equip one million youth annually with technical and vocational skills by 2030, in line with Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Speaking on the curicullum, Hon. Christine Ombaka urged institutions to deepen community outreach. “Why don’t you engage and reach out to locals who have the skills but not the certificates? RPL gives them a second chance,” she said.

The Committee praised TVETs for embracing skill-based training and modular short courses, with a growing uptake of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programs among skilled workers and community members, particularly during holidays.

Mawego Principal Dr. John Abuto confirmed the institution is actively involved in construction projects through the Affordable Housing Programme and is championing sustainability. “We are a green university; we plant trees and involve our students in practical projects,” said Dr. Abuto.

Dr. Abuto also noted challenges in the Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC). “The assessments are good for building skills, but the cost is high. We print exam materials and supervise the process ourselves,” he explained.

A section of the Committee also visited Tseikuru National Polytechnic and North Eastern National Polytechnic.

Led by Committee Vice Chair, Hon. Eve Obara, legislators noted with concern that some TVETS are operating without necessary workshops and equipment meant to give skill and knowledge to students.

During an inspection visit at the Tseikuru National Polytechnic in Kitui County and North Eastern National Polytechnic in Garissa County, lawmakers were surprised that Tseikuru National Polytechnic has never had a graduation of its students since it started 10 years ago.

The Committee on Education resolved to summon the Cabinet Secretary for Education Migos Ogamba to shed light on why National Polytechnics have been neglected.

TSC’s 25,000 Teacher Promotions: A Step Forward or Just Another Unfair Distribution?

TSC’s 25,000 Teacher Promotions: A Step Forward or Just Another Unfair Distribution?

In April 2025, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) declared the promotion of 25,252 teachers throughout Kenya. This announcement came after a substantial application turnout, with over 189,000 teachers competing for the limited positions, underscoring the fierce competition and desire for career progression in the teaching field.

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia justified the promotion process, asserting that it followed legal guidelines and was decentralized to guarantee regional representation. Nevertheless, the distribution has ignited controversy. For example, Machakos County was granted 690 promotions, while Garissa County received merely 303, prompting questions about the equity of the distribution.

Members of Parliament and teacher unions have voiced their concerns regarding the process’s transparency. They claim that some teachers have been consecutively promoted multiple times, whereas others have stayed in the same job group for over ten years. This situation has resulted in demands for TSC to disclose comprehensive criteria for the promotions and to rectify the inequalities.

While it is praiseworthy that TSC is tackling career stagnation, the current promotion process seems to lack transparency and fairness. The notable inequalities between counties and the repeated promotions of specific individuals indicate a necessity for a more just system. Teachers who have devoted years to their profession merit acknowledgment and advancement opportunities.

What are your views on this matter? Do you think the promotion process was equitable?
