CS Migos: Mathematics to Remain Mandatory Across All Senior School Pathways.
Nairobi — Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Migos has declared that Mathematics will continue to be a mandatory subject in all senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), after extensive consultations and input from stakeholders.
Addressing the audience on Tuesday, CS Migos disclosed that most participants in the recent CBC dialogue supported the idea of making Mathematics a required subject, highlighting its essential role in critical thinking and problem-solving across various fields.
“Most of the stakeholders during the CBC dialogue were of the opinion that Mathematics should be mandatory in senior school,” stated CS Migos. “We have taken into account your concerns, consulted with KICD, and arrived at a decision that some form of Mathematics be made necessary for the two other pathways that are not STEM. ”
The CBC framework comprises three senior school pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Arts and Sports Science. Until this point, Mathematics had mainly been prioritized in the STEM track.
This decision is anticipated to standardize learning and ensure that all students, regardless of their selected pathway, acquire vital numeracy skills relevant in daily life and the modern workforce.
Additional information regarding the implementation and curriculum development for the non-STEM pathways will be provided by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in the future.
