Good News for Teachers as 2025–2029 CBA Proposal Includes Up to Sh48,761 Risk Allowance

Positive changes are on the horizon for teachers as the 2025–2029 CBA proposal suggests a risk allowance of up to Sh48,761.

Through such proposals, these educators would receive compensation for the difficult environments, which can sometimes be dangerous, encountered while performing their professional responsibilities.

Regarding the suggested framework of the risk allowance, greater amounts will be allocated to teachers in higher job grades.

Teachers in job grade D5, earning a salary of Sh243,808. 50, will receive the largest risk allowance of Sh48,761, based on 20% of their basic pay. This will represent the highest tier of risk-related compensation in the current proposals.

The allowance will decrease progressively for those in lower job grades.
For instance, teachers in job group D4 will receive Sh45,348. 66, followed by Sh41,428. 16 and Sh37,168. 89 for those in job groups D3 and D2, respectively.

Intermediate administrators in grades D1 and C5 will receive allowances of Sh32,769. 54 and Sh27,877. 85, respectively.

Classroom teachers in job grades C4 and C3, often stationed in remote and unsafe locations, will benefit from proposed allowances of Sh24,788. 52 and Sh21,861. 08, respectively.

Risk allowances will also be provided to teachers in the lower job groups C2 and C1, that is, Sh18,186. 04 and Sh14,521. 26, respectively.

The TSC proposal, supported by teachers’ unions, is seen as a timely response to uplift the spirits of teachers and acknowledge the dangers they face in various regions.

It is also aligned with the ongoing demands for improved salaries for teachers in challenging areas.

Once approved, the new CBA will significantly help in addressing inequalities that enhance the wellbeing of Kenyan teachers across all job groups.
