The Education Ministry has transitioned from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to a new system known as Competency-Based Education (CBE).
Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok praised CBE as “the best education system in the world,” highlighting its emphasis on fostering students’ unique interests and talents. During a thanksgiving event at Baringo High School in Eldama Ravine, Bitok noted that this new approach represents a major change from the previous curriculum, with the goal of developing a more capable and self-motivated generation of learners.
“CBE is the best education system globally because it allows our youth to express their talents. We will implement our new system, KEMIS, to ensure a 100 percent transition from Junior School to Senior School,” Bitok stated.
He mentioned that approximately 1.2 million children are expected to move from Junior School to Senior School, assuring that all necessary arrangements are in place for their enrollment.
However, his comments come at a time when teachers and parents are increasingly frustrated by the government’s lack of clear guidelines for choosing learning pathways, a crucial aspect of the new system. This uncertainty has created anxiety in schools as 1.2 million students prepare to advance from Grade 9 to Grade 10.
In response to these concerns, the Ministry of Education has gathered over 1,000 stakeholders to refine and oversee the implementation of CBE. Additionally, they have committed to hiring 24,000 new teachers this year to ensure the effective rollout of the system.
