Machakos High Senior Secondary || SCHOOL’S HISTORY

The school started in a modest way in 1915 as a Boys’ Primary School at the current Machakos Girls grounds. It was known as African Government School. It was not until 1939 that it changed into a boys Secondary School.

Over the years, the institution underwent a series of transformations that reflected its growth and shifting educational priorities in Kenya’s history.

In 1946, the school transitioned into a mixed institution, admitting both boys and girls.

However, just four years later in 1950, the boys were moved to what is now Machakos School, and the girls’ section was renamed the Government African Girls Intermediate School.

It admitted African students only, and hence the name “Government African Boys School”.

The first principal, who was white (1950), was called Crowford, who stayed for only 4 years. Over time, the school has grown from a 3-streamed school to a 10-streamed one.

Since its inception, more than 17,000 students have gone through Machakos School.

Machakos School is located about 2km from Machakos town on Kitui, Machakos – Nairobi road. It is about 16km from Machakos – Nairobi road junction and about 70 km from Nairobi.

The school has a total of 76 teachers of whom 64 are employed by T.S.C while 12 are B.O.M employees. The Non-teaching support staff is made up of 51 members. All sections of the school system are fairly staffed. The school programmes are carried out by both the teaching and non-teaching staff together with the students’ council. .

Over the time the school has grown from a 3 streamed school to a 10 streamed one with a student’s population of 2200. Since its inception more than 17,000 students have gone through Machakos School. The school has been able to offer a wide curriculum and external exams
