TSC Educators to Gain from New Two-Year Programme Organised by Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education announced the launch of a two-year in-service diploma programme for practicing teachers affiliated with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The training, set to take place at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), is planned to commence in 2025 and will concentrate on Special Needs Education (SNE).
This new initiative equips teachers with the skills required to instruct learners with various disabilities, including individuals with visual and hearing impairments, those with autism and other intellectual disabilities, individuals facing physical challenges, and those who are deafblind.
It is part of the broader ministry’s mandate regarding inclusive education throughout Kenya.
Practicing teachers who meet certain criteria are encouraged to submit applications for the scholarship.
As such, applicants must be Kenyan citizens under the age of 50, hold a P1 teaching certificate, and have at least five years of teaching experience under TSC.
Additionally, certified copies of the applicants’ original academic and professional credentials are necessary, along with a national ID or passport, a recent passport-sized photo, and all other required supporting documents.
Teachers who wish to apply for the programme can obtain the application forms from the ministry’s website or from county and sub-county education offices. Completed forms must be submitted in person to the Sub-County Director of Education (SCDE) by 9th May 2025.
The SCDE offices will pass on the applications to the Ministry’s headquarters at Jogoo House by 16th May 2025.
The enrolment of teachers through the application process has made provisions for individuals with disabilities.
Those who are visually impaired, for instance, will not be obligated to submit their applications in handwritten form.
In contrast, Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok stated that there will be no registration fee required, which reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that this process is accessible and inclusive.
The successful applicants will then receive notifications via SMS regarding how to obtain their admission letters.
This training programme is poised to significantly enhance the skills of teachers in effectively supporting special needs learners, aiming to realize the ideal scenario of equal educational opportunities for all students in Kenya.
