How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools
To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has begun contacting teachers who applied for the 2,014 replacement teaching positions, for which applications closed on May 19, 2025.
TSC organized 2,014 teaching vacancies in an advertisement, with 1,309 in primary schools, 32 in junior schools, and 673 in secondary schools.
The job is permanent and eligible for a pension plan (PNP). For primary school openings, the Commission stated that a P1 certificate was the bare minimum qualification, while a degree in education was required for junior and secondary schools.
The Commission has identified the academic and professional papers that must be shown to the recruiting board for verification.
For verification, applicants must provide legible photocopies of the following items, among other pertinent documents:

10) An affidavit stating the reason for the discrepancy in names, sworn in accordance with the Oaths and Statutory Declarations Act, Cap 15 of the Laws of Kenya.

Teachers and civil servants will lose Sh6 billion in hardship allowances after the government reviewed which areas are considered hardship zones.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi explained that different groups use different boundaries to define hardship areas. For example, the civil service uses old district lines, while the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) uses educational zones.
As a result of this review, many teachers and civil servants will see cuts in their hardship allowances. The government plans to save Sh6 billion each year by reducing the total amount paid from Sh25 billion to Sh19 billion.
The review, which started in 2019, looked at how hardship areas are identified and how allowances are given to workers. Mudavadi noted that some areas previously labeled as hardship have improved significantly since the government changed its structure in 2013, leading to better access to services like water, health, and education.
The findings have been sent to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to set new payment rates and to the Chief of Staff to start the official process of updating the lists.
The report also highlighted that not all workers in hardship areas receive the allowance, often due to unclear rules. Some regions within a county may qualify while others do not.
Currently, different public sectors have different lists of hardship areas: the civil service recognizes 16, the TSC has 44, and the Judiciary lists 21. This inconsistency has led to confusion and complaints, prompting MPs to discuss the issue in Parliament, with many saying the current classifications are unfair.
Nyando MP Jared Okelo asked a question on the issue last month, prompting calls for a proper review to reflect current realities.
Hardship allowances were introduced in 1969 to support officers working in remote and underdeveloped areas. These are regions that lack basic services like food, water, transport, communication, and health.
Mudavadi said the aim is to apply one clear policy across all arms of the public service, so the allowance can be shared fairly based on clear and current standards.
“The proposed harmonisation of the designated hardship areas in the public service” will guide this process, he said.
The move is expected to affect workers who have long relied on the hardship allowance, as some may lose the benefit once the revised regions are made public.

THOGOTO TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE KUCCPS PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS.
Applicants seeking a chance in the primary TTCs must have at least a mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE or equivalent, while those seeking enrolment into Diploma in Secondary Education are required to have a minimum of C+ in KCSE or equivalent. Duration of the Training
The duration of Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) is three years. The trainee is expected to cover course material for 3,000 hours.
Subjects Offered
The trainee undertaking DPTE shall take all courses specified in the DPTE curriculum which includes professional courses and subject learning areas in the Primary School Curriculum.
Award of Diploma
To be awarded the diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours for coursework and pass stipulated assessment by the college and KNEC. The trainee will be expected to also cover the stipulated hours of practicum. The diploma will be awarded by KNEC upon passing all the stipulated assessments and practicums.
The entry requirements for the Upgrade Programme to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (UDPTE) is a Certificate in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) and TSC Registration Certificate.

The duration for Upgrade to DPTE shall be four (4) school terms, three (3) terms will be used for coursework and one (1) term for practicum. The coursework may be offered either in a full time mode or blended mode of study. In a full time study mode, all learning sessions will take place in the institution during school days. In the blended mode, students shall take some learning sessions in the college during school holidays and engage in self-study through projects and assignments during the school term in a distance under the supervision of college tutors.
Subjects Offered
The teachers pursuing the Upgrade Programme to DPTE shall take all professional courses specified in the DPTE Curriculum as well as Subject areas they did not specialize in during the PTE Programme. The trainnes must cover 1,200 hours for coursework and 300 hours for practicum sessions. The total numbers of hours UDPTE candidate is required to cover is 1,500 hours.
Award of Diploma
To be awarded the diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours for coursework and pass stipulated assessment by the college and KNEC. The trainee will be expected to also cover the stipulated hours of practicum. The diploma will be awarded by KNEC upon passing all the stipulated assessments and practicums.
DIPLOMA IN PRIMARY TEACHER EDUCATION (DPTE)
A DPTE Teacher Qualifies to teach in grade 1-6 (or 9 if one meets TSC employment terms for secondary school teachers) of the Kenyan Education .
This programme is now being replaced from 2024 with Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE) which is a combination of DECTE and DPTE. The graduates will teach from PP1 to Grade 6.

Course Duration: DPTE will take three (3) years of study in accordance with the approved Curriculum designs.
The diploma teacher trainees will cover the recommended hours for coursework, required hours for practicum and pass the assessments as directed by Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
The Teacher Trainee shall be required to undertake three months micro-teaching course.
The Teacher Trainee will undertake 2 terms of practicum.

II. Progress in Training.
Performance while in training is continuously assessed and monitored. There will be internal (College) and external (KNEC) assessments. For the internal assessments progress report will be issued every term.

The College is multi-denominational. Each one is free to practice one’s faith provided that by doing so, the rights of other students and residents are not prejudiced or compromised in any way.

TSC Urges School Leaders to Help, Not Punish, Teachers in Need
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is asking school principals to support teachers who are having a hard time instead of punishing them right away. Japhat Kariuki, the TSC Director for the Nyanza region, made this statement at a recent conference for secondary school heads in Kisumu.
Kariuki highlighted the importance of understanding the problems teachers face, such as issues with alcohol or personal life challenges, before taking any formal action against them.
He noted that teachers often deal with social issues, like family problems, that can affect their work.
“When teachers are struggling, they should be helped, not punished,” he said.
Cavin Anyuor, a TSC Legal Officer, explained that school principals have the power to suspend teachers, not the TSC. He advised them to make sure any suspensions are for serious reasons, not minor issues. For instance, there was a case where a headteacher punished a Junior School teacher by not allowing them to use a chair.
The TSC is also encouraging principals to participate in the Teacher Induction Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) program. This program aims to create support systems for teachers, focusing on both prevention and correction.
Kariuki pointed out that many principals do not properly help new teachers settle in, which can leave them feeling confused. He urged school leaders to guide new teachers in understanding their roles, responsibilities, and school rules. This support helps teachers grow emotionally and creates a positive school environment.
He also suggested that teachers who struggle with managing their classrooms could benefit from guidance from more experienced colleagues. Additionally, principals should assist teachers in balancing their work and personal lives, especially during family issues.
Kariuki concluded by encouraging school leaders to make coaching a regular practice, ensuring that teachers continuously improve their skills and meet higher professional standards.
A significant reshuffling of secondary school teachers is anticipated as schools prepare to enroll the first cohort of Senior School students in January.
A report from the Ministry of Education, titled ‘National Report: County-Based Dialogue on Education Quality and Learning Outcomes in Competency-Based Education (CBE),’ outlines plans for transitioning from Junior School to Senior Secondary and suggests redistributing teachers to alleviate shortages.
The proposal recommends reallocating teachers according to the specific pathways that schools will offer, which could result in thousands of teachers being transferred across different counties and regions.
The report highlights that schools are facing critical shortages, especially in technical and vocational education subjects. It particularly points out a lack of teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), raising concerns about the quality of teaching and learning in Senior School.
“Stakeholders have expressed worries about the lack of teachers in various subject areas, especially in specialized fields like Music within Creative Arts, Special Needs Education (SNE), and Pre-Technical Studies,” the report indicates.
If this plan is put into action, it could lead to significant controversy, as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) prepares to enforce these changes. Previous mass teacher transfers have often resulted in backlash from teachers’ unions and school communities.
In 2018, the TSC faced widespread protests after implementing a delocalization policy that moved teachers away from their home counties under the guise of promoting national integration. Many teachers reported issues such as family separation, psychological stress, financial difficulties, and challenges in adapting to new cultural settings.
At that time, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) criticized the government for proceeding with the transfers without sufficient consultation, labeling the initiative as punitive rather than constructive. “We want family considerations to be prioritized, and we also request that affected teachers be relocated within their local areas,” Nthurima stated to the press.

SELECTION OF PATHWAYS AND SENIOR SCHOOLS
• Determination of pathways per senior school
• Determination of vacancies for boarding and day schooling in senior schools

The learner will select 12 schools for their chosen pathway as follows.
– Four 4 schools in first choice track and subject combination
– Four (4) schools in second choice subject combination
– Four (4) schools in third choice subject combination (Total 12 schools) Selection based on accommodation
Out of the 12 schools selected based on pathway;
9 will be boarding schools; 3 from the learners’ home county, 6 from outside their home county/county of residence.
Three (3) day schools in their home sub county/sub county of residence. (Total 12 schools)
Pre selection – A school that does not allow open placement can apply to be pre-select if it meets the criteria defined by the Ministry of Education.
How Placement of learners to Senior Schools (SS) at Grade 10 will be done
It will be based on:
Top 6 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in schools of choice
Top 3 learners per gender in each Social Science track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in schools of choice
Top 2 learners per gender in each Arts and Sports Science track per sub-county be placed to Boarding schools of their choice
Placement of Candidates with Achievement Level of averaging 7 and 8 per track to boarding schools of their choice
Admission and replacement process
Placement results will show where learners have been placed
Admission letters/joining instructions shall be accessed online using the learner’s assessment Number.
All schools, both public and private shall admit Grade 10 through KEMIS
Leaners will be entered to the KEMIS System only after reporting physically to the school.
Daily online reporting shall be monitored through KEMIS
Replacements
Schools with vacancies will declare through their respective county directors of education
Learners who wish to change schools will make requests through the heads of junior schools at least 2 weeks before the official grade 10 reporting date
Priority shall be given to those who had earlier selected the schools they are requesting for Approvals by MoE shall be based on senior schools’ documented capacity

The learner will select 12 schools for their chosen pathway as follows.
– Four 4 schools in first choice track and subject combination
– Four (4) schools in second choice subject combination
– Four (4) schools in third choice subject combination (Total 12 schools) Selection based on accommodation
Out of the 12 schools selected based on pathway;
9 will be boarding schools; 3 from the learners’ home county, 6 from outside their home county/county of residence.
Three (3) day schools in their home sub county/sub county of residence. (Total 12 schools)
Pre selection – A school that does not allow open placement can apply to be pre-select if it meets the criteria defined by the Ministry of Education.
How Placement of learners to Senior Schools (SS) at Grade 10 will be done
It will be based on:
Top 6 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in schools of choice
Top 3 learners per gender in each Social Science track per sub-county will be placed for Boarding in schools of choice
Top 2 learners per gender in each Arts and Sports Science track per sub-county be placed to Boarding schools of their choice
Placement of Candidates with Achievement Level of averaging 7 and 8 per track to boarding schools of their choice

Admission letters/joining instructions shall be accessed online using the learner’s assessment Number.
All schools, both public and private shall admit Grade 10 through KEMIS
Leaners will be entered to the KEMIS System only after reporting physically to the school.
Daily online reporting shall be monitored through KEMIS
Replacements
Schools with vacancies will declare through their respective county directors of education
Learners who wish to change schools will make requests through the heads of junior schools at least 2 weeks before the official grade 10 reporting date
Priority shall be given to those who had earlier selected the schools they are requesting for Approvals by MoE shall be based on senior schools’ documented capacity
