MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN CHOOSING COURSES

1. Filling the contact form with incorrect phone numbers.

If you complete the contact form with inaccurate information, you jeopardize your chances of receiving crucial KUCCPS communications that are typically sent to applicants using the contact details they provided.

2. Leaving courses in the Course Basket without submitting an application.

The application process does not conclude with the Course Basket. It is essential to submit an application to be considered. To submit, please click the “Application/Revision” button, followed by “Apply Now. ”

3. Applying for only one Programme and Leaving other Choices Blank.

Applicants are permitted to apply for a maximum of four programmes. Submitting an application for only one programme restricts your placement opportunities to that single option.

4. Applying for the same course in all the choices.

This presents a risk, particularly for applicants interested in competitive courses such as Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy. It is advisable for applicants to have a range of options in order to reduce the likelihood of missing placement opportunities.

5. Selecting only one course in one institution.

Submitting an application for only one course at a single institution diminishes your chances of being placed.

6. Arranging courses randomly in the online application form.

When applying, it is crucial to organize the courses according to your order of preference, with Choice Number 1 representing your most favored course and number four denoting your least favored. A random arrangement may result in being assigned to a course that is not your top choice. For degree programmes, Choices 1a, 1b, and 1c should consist of the same programme offered at three different universities, arranged according to your preference. The remaining choices (2, 3, and 4) may include any course at any university, also prioritized in your order of preference.

7. Using the M-Pesa Transaction ID to submit application instead of eCitizen account.

Upon making a payment, you will receive a confirmation SMS from M-Pesa. This message includes both the M-Pesa transaction ID (which is a combination of letters and numbers appearing at the beginning of the message) as well as an eCitizen account identifier (a combination of letters found in the middle of the message). Please utilize the eCitizen account for submission.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) reports that over 8,000 students have opted for diploma programs instead of pursuing university degree courses for which they qualified. Specifically, 8,130 candidates who attained a minimum grade of C+—rendering them eligible for degree programs—have chosen to apply for diploma courses.

The institutions selected by these students include the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), the Kenya School of Law, and the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas. Concurrently, there has been a sluggish response to university placements, with KUCCPS data indicating that only 104,514 out of 246,391 eligible candidates have submitted applications for degree programs. This suggests that more than half of the qualified candidates have yet to select university courses, with the application deadline approaching in two weeks.

Regarding the three preferred diploma institutions, the Kenya Medical Training College operates as a state corporation under the Ministry of Health, tasked with training professionals across various health disciplines to meet local, regional, and international demand. Conversely, the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas (MIOG) specializes in training related to oil and gas sectors. This institution was established following a resolution made during the 3rd Heads of State Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, on October 28, 2013, where the leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan agreed to create Centres of Excellence to enhance capacity for the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP).

The Kenya School of Law serves as the sole bar school in Kenya. After obtaining an undergraduate degree in law from an accredited university, students attend the Kenya School of Law to prepare for admission to the Kenyan Bar.

Notably, for the first time, the Kenya School of Law has partnered with KUCCPS to offer a Diploma in Law program, thereby enabling students who may have previously perceived a legal career as unattainable to enroll. Traditionally, entry into the legal profession in Kenya has been restricted to students with high academic performance, particularly those qualifying for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree.

In response to the low application rates, KUCCPS plans to extend the application deadline from April 21 to April 30. Chief Executive Officer Agnes Mercy Wahome, in a statement to journalists, encouraged students to consider enrolling in underrepresented programs, such as agriculture, at the degree level.

“To date, we have received 104,514 degree applications. We are urging students to pursue agricultural courses at the degree level,” Dr. Wahome remarked.

Additionally, she noted that KUCCPS’s integration with the eCitizen platform has streamlined the application process, and ongoing sensitization campaigns are being conducted nationwide.

KUCCPS Plans to Implement Career Assessments in Junior Schools

The Kenya University and College Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has suggested that students be evaluated on potential career options while in junior schools.

During the second annual CBC symposium held on Wednesday, April 23, Prof John Oluoch, the Director for Placement and Career Development, claimed that this would provide ample time for organizing the career paths of learners by selecting the appropriate subjects.

“The timing of career assessments is essential, particularly during the Junior School years when learners are honing their career objectives. Evaluations during this time can assist in concentrating focus and aiding educational planning,” he remarked.

“By incorporating these practices and recognizing the significance of assessment data, educators can effectively guide learners in choosing senior schools and career paths that align well with their interests and abilities. ”

His views were supported by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Central Careers, Joseph Muraya, who highlighted the significance of assessing learners prior to making career decisions.

He stated that this would allow students to attain satisfaction in their future careers with a greater likelihood of success, as they will have selected paths that are more suitable for them.

He additionally called upon the ministry to prioritize education regarding pathways and placement criteria.

“Students who participate in personality assessments to discover appropriate careers are more inclined to uncover roles that match their strengths and interests, resulting in increased job satisfaction and success rates. The Ministry of Education must provide more sensitization and awareness on pathways and placement. ”

Within the CBC system, senior secondary school students will need to choose among three pathways that best correspond with their career aspirations.

These three pathways consist of Arts and Sports, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), each of which will offer different subjects.

In the new framework, for example, mathematics will only be mandatory for STEM students, a revelation that has polarized the nation, with experts warning that this change will have serious implications for the students’ futures.

However, students will have the option to select up to two pathways to enhance their career opportunities.
